The Stanley Holden Award for Distinguished Teaching honors a dance educator whole life reflects a deep commitment to artistic excellence and to the students entrusted to their care.
Named for legendary dance educator Stanley Holden, the award recognizes teachers whose influence reaches far beyond the studio–teachers who help shape not only better dancers, but better artists and human beings.
His legacy continued through the Dean Barlow Dance Academy, where students of all ages discovered the joy, discipline, and artistry of dance.
Dean Barlow is among the distinguished educators to have received this honor.
For Dean, teaching has always been about much more than technique. It is about discipline, musicality, respect for the craft, and helping each student discover what they are capable of becoming.

DEAR STUDENTS,
When I look back over my life in dance, I realize that the greatest part of the journey was never simply being on a stage. It was the people I met along the way—especially the students who walked into my classroom with a desire to learn, to improve, and to discover what they were capable of becoming. I have watched young dancers arrive with uncertainty and, through patience, discipline, and hard work, find confidence in themselves. Those moments have meant more to me than any applause.
Dance has a way of teaching us about life if we are willing to listen. It teaches us patience when something doesn’t come easily. It teaches us discipline when we would rather take the easier path. It teaches us to accept correction, to keep going when we make mistakes, and to understand that improvement rarely happens overnight. The steps are important, but what you learn about yourself while learning those steps is even more important.
Throughout my years of teaching, I have always hoped to give my students more than choreography. I wanted you to understand the responsibility that comes with being a dancer—to respect the art, respect the people who came before you, and respect the work it takes to become good at what you do. If I helped you believe in yourself, even for a moment, or gave you something you carried with you beyond the dance floor, then I consider that one of the greatest accomplishments of my life.
